Portfolio: Case Histories
The following case histories are brief summaries of actual SM Engineering client savings. The names of the clients have been intentionally deleted to respect confidentiality.

These case histories serve to demonstrate both the versatility of SM Engineering and some of the possible savings that are overlooked everyday by both large and small companies.
Working with limited access:  Major camera & film manuafacturer.

Following a company-wide mandate to reduce energy costs, the finance department of this company hired SM Engineering. Even though the plant managers were already analyzing their gas and electric bills, SM Engineering was able to unearth, through close examination of the company's water and sewer bills, significant opportunities for savings. SME's work included negotiations with the upper echelon at the Metropolitan Wastewater Commission, modeling cities' usage and rainfall, and a thorough analysis of all available data.

  • Annual Savings: $250,000
Water/Sewer suggestions:  Plating Company.

This Company had very large water and sewer bills. We were able to work out an arrangement with the city whereby electronic meters were installed, for a cost of $2,000. This outlay was quickly recaptured through savings.
  • Annual Savings: $20,000
Even if you have in-house staff:  Major medical device manuafacturer.

This Company told SM Engineering that they had analyzed their utilities in-house. We convinced them to let us confirm that they had covered all the bases. To their surprise, we uncovered additional savings.
  • Refund: $90,000
You'll never know what we'll find:  Italian restaurant chain.

At nine of their ten locations there were no available savings. But one location was a mall leasehold in which the landlord was billing the restaurant on a sub meter tenant relationship. Their lease stated that they would be billed at the same rate as their landlord, but it was difficult for the landlord to figure what portion was theirs. They were being charged at the higher residential rate and had been for several years. We were able to obtain a healthy refund and save them money annually.
  • Refund: $18,000
Total energy audit:  Major computer manufacturer.

Over the course of several months, SM Engineering's engineers completed a comprehensive energy audit that resulted in significant savings. SM Engineering also suggested, to the company's decision-makers, several conservation measures that quickly recaptured the initial outlay. These measures continue to save the company a quarter of a million dollars annually.
  • Refund: $650,000
  • Annual Savings: $250,000
